The Some No Komichi, or Fabric Dyeing Festival is held annually in the neighborhood of Nakai, just north of Shinjuku. Nakai’s history dates back centuries when it was the center for production of cloth used to make kimono and other traditional Japanese crafts. During the festival (the last weekend in February or first in March), specially dyed noren are hung at the entrances to 100 of the area’s local businesses. Visitors are encouraged to “follow the path” of the 100 noren, taking them through the streets of the neighborhood to sample some of the interesting and unique shops and restaurants located here.
