$150 Watermelon

It should be no surprise that the cost of fruit in Japan is much higher than many other countries given the limited available land. But how do you explain a $150 watermelon? A typical watermelon of this size costs $25-30, but this beauty, called “Godzilla Egg”, comes with it’s own cage. The answer to this question is that fruit is often used as special gifts, particularly for people you want to look good in front of. The finest fruits command premium prices, not simply because they are good to eat, but because of the prestige of being the giver of such a divine gift.
