The Japanese are avid readers and dedicated recyclers, so it makes perfect sense that used books would be a huge second-hand market in Japan. There is no larger collection of used books than Jimbocho, the heart of the Kanda district of Tokyo. Used bookstores contain books both inside and out (on the shade side of buildings where they won’t be damaged by the sun), covered by tarp curtains in the rain or at night. Rare books, magazines and foreign books can all be found in large quantities in this area. And of course, many cafes encouraging reading are liberally sprinkled throughout the area making Jimbocho a readers paradise.
