Jizo

The image of Jizo, a jovial bald headed monk, is found throughout Buddhist temples all over Japan, and sometimes seen by themselves on the side of a road or forest path. Jizo is said to be the protector of children, and many parents who have lost a child through abortion, miscarriage or tragedy will appeal to Jizo to watch over their children in the spiritual realm. Jizo always appears happy and approachable, perhaps making him a friendly face to children. If you see Jizo statues in a group, look closely at each one and you will see that no two are exactly alike.
