Seeing a General Motors Hummer SUV squeezing down the streets of suburban Japan is a rare sight, but seeing a Hummer bicycle being casually pedaled down same street? Not so much. No, General Motors does not have a secret bicycle division exporting low cost bikes to Japan. These bikes, available as Hummer, Chevrolet, and Cadillac are the brainchild of the GIC company which is ironically Japanese. However, all of GIC’s bikes are imports… from China, where 90% of all other bikes sold in Japan come from. The American names on the bikes come from a deal with GM that helps sells bikes to people who idolize American brands while promoting brand recognition in Japan for GM.
